Chief J. Lugtenburg

…It seemed as if this man had sailed all his life as Chief engineer on the ‘Utrecht’.

Anchor winch.

I also experienced this calm and sympathetic man.
He knew everything in the engine room and pampered the engines.

The main engines still had real copper cooling water pipes that ran along the engines.
If it was quiet he would clean these pipes with great dedication, which had such a beautiful deep gloss.
If they had to be tinkered with, they were neatly covered.
It was the man’s lust and his life.

But also Chief Lugtenburg sometimes had to be relieved.
Another Chief engineer comes downstairs and oversees the engine room.
He didn’t like those shiny pipes.

Everything has to be painted, including the cooling water pipes.
There were still protests, but it happened anyway.
But he too was relieved and replaced by… Chief Lugtenburg.
I never saw that man so bewildered when he saw his pipes.
All paint had to be removed again and Chief Lugtenburg started polishing again.

It has never been so beautiful again.
